Ghana get good CAN draw
Hosts Ghana fared better than holders Egypt when the 2008 African Nations Cup draw was made Friday.
Ghana are in Group A with poor travellers Morocco, unpredictable Guinea and minnows Namibia and a team powered by midfielders Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah look set for a top-two finish and a quarter-finals slot.
Egypt, winners of the biennial competition a record five times, are in Group C with mighty Cameroon, revitalised Zambia and dark horses Sudan, back at the Nations Cup after a 32-year absence.
Every major football tournament delivers one fearsome group and in Ghana it will be Group B where giants Nigeria and Ivory Coast will not relish tackling fellow west Africans Mali and Benin.
Intrigue envelopes Group D with nothing to choose between former champions Tunisia and South Africa, one-time runners-up Senegal and shock 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers Angola.
The tournament kicks off on 20 January with a clash between Ghana and Guinea in Accra that will offer the hosts and four-time African champions a realistic chance to make a winning start.
After a three-match programme the following day, the tournament will settle into a two-games-a-day schedule until the completion of the mini-league phase on 31 January.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for 3 and 4 February and the semi-finals for 7 February ahead of the February 10 finale with many observers predicting a west African showdown between Ghana and Ivory Coast.
Matches will be staged in the capital, Accra, and another coastal venue, Sekondi, plus the central city of Kumasi and the northern town of Tamale as Ghana play host to the Nations Cup a fourth time.
Former Ghana stars Abedi 'Pele' Ayew and Tony Baffoe and Ghana-born Michel Desailly, a member of the France 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, helped African Football Confederation secretary-general Mustapha Fahmy make the draw.

THE DAY REPLAYED - Argentina took another significant step towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ when they secured their second consecutive win to move out front in the group after just two rounds of matches.
Elsewhere there were maiden wins for Brazil, Paraguay and Chile, who saw off neighbours Peru in the Pacific derby, while Bolivia failed to capitalise on home advantage and shared the points with Colombia in La Paz. As usual FIFA.com is on hand to round up all the highlights.

The stakes were high ahead of the Pacific derby in Santiago and the big match duly lived up to its billing as Chile and Peru served up a tight, not to say fraught, encounter. It was La Roja who deservedly pocketed the points, with ex-Colo Colo duo Humberto Suazo and Matias Fernandez putting a smile back on coach Marcelo Bielsa's face with goals in each half. Suazo got the ball rolling with an 11th-minute header before strike partner Fernandez sealed the points from Arturo Vidal's sublime assist.
After Saturday's stalemate with Paraguay, the defeat leaves Jose Del Solar's men at the wrong end of the table and with much to ponder.
Surprise of the day
Although shocks were thin on the ground on matchday two, many will be surprised to see Ecuador floundering at the bottom of the standings. After gracing Korea/Japan 2002 and Germany 2006 Luis Suarez's side need to find some inspiration and quickly if they are to maintain realistic hopes of a third successive finals appearance.

With experienced custodians such as Farid Mondragon, Oscar Cordoba and Miguel Calero all in the twilight of their careers, the search has been on for a worthy successor in the Colombian goal. While hardly in the first flush of youth himself, 32-year-old shotstopper Agustin Julio has staked a compelling claim for an extended run between the posts. The Deportes Tolima man was the Cafeteros' stand-out performer in La Paz, reeling off a string of spectacular stops, confident catches and flying saves to thwart Erwin Sanchez's charges and keep his goal intact for the second game in a row.

Fernandez's fine match-sealing strike for Chile caught the eye, but the Villarreal man was eclipsed by another wonder goal from the peerless Kaka. After setting up Ronaldinho for Brazil's second of the night against Ecuador, the first of the AC Milan midfielder's brace saw him lash a thunderous right-footed drive into the top left-hand corner of Daniel Viteri's net.
Conclusions
It may still be early days, but it already seems clear that no-one will be having an easy time of it away from home. The only winners on the road this week were group leaders Argentina, who recorded a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Venezuela thanks to first-half goals from Gabriel Milito and Lionel Messi.
Desperately hoping for a home win to give their qualification bid some momentum, Bolivia had to be content with a 0-0 draw against Colombia, who have yet to score and yet to concede. Paraguay showed the Bolivians how it was done by securing a trademark 1-0 defeat of Uruguay in Asuncion, the goal coming from Nelson Haedo Valdez after 14 minutes. Following their big win at the weekend, it was a disappointing evening for the Celeste, who failed to make the hosts pay for their continuing struggles in front of goal.

Back in 2000 Bolivia were on the wrong end of a 5-0 thrashing, and on Wednesday evening it was Ecuador's turn to get the five-star treatment as the hosts romped to a similarly emphatic win. Sporting unfamiliar blue tops, the bemused visitors struggled manfully to hold their own after Vagner Love put the hosts ahead 19 minutes in. The floodgates opened in the final half-hour, however, Ronaldinho, Kaka (2) and Elano getting the goals as the continental champions ominously manoeuvred themselves into second place in the table, just behind Argentina.
The numbers game
Javier Zanetti will always remember his side's 2-0 defeat of Venezuela. The evergreen full-back equalled Roberto Ayala's record of 115 appearances for the Albiceleste in Maracaibo, deserved recompense for the Inter Milan skipper after he missed out on a place at Germany 2006.

Okubo strikes twice to sink Egypt
Yoshito Okubo scored his first goals for his country as Japan cruised to a 4-1 victory over a second-string Egypt side to win the AFC Asia-Africa Challenge Cup on Wednesday in Osaka.
The 25-year-old Vissel Kobe striker scored in the 20th and 42nd minutes to put the home side in the driving seat, the second coming courtesy of a cross from Osaka midfielder Yasuhito Endo.
"Finally I scored. I feel relieved because it was my first goal," said Okubo. "I was able to beat a defender when I received the ball, so I was determined to hit a shot at goal. I also received a nice cross for the second goal. The ball happened to hit my head and went into the goal. I'm glad it went in."
Egypt got off to the better start in this match between the five-time CAF Africa Cup of Nations winners and the 2004 Asian Cup champions, who were playing their last international of the year. But it was the Japanese who had the first effort at goal, Kawasaki Frontale's Kengo Nakamura forcing visiting goalkeeper Abd El Monsef into a fifth-minute save.
With Japan two goals up at the break thanks to Okubo, the home side went further aheaad on 53 minutes through Jubilo Iwata striker Ryoichi Maeda for what was also his first goal for his country after he exchanged passes with Satoru Yamagishi before finishing from close range.
The visitors managed to pull one back moments later when midfielder Hosni Abdrabo hit a free kick from outside the area which grazed forward Mohamed Fadl's back and went in. Any hint of a comeback was dashed in the 67th minute as Yuichi Komano crossed for Akira Kaji to score.
"It was not important whether it was the last game of the year or not," said Japan coach Ivica Osim. "Although Egypt used some young players today, we played very good against such a strong team like Egypt. There is not a big difference between the two teams like the score indicates.
"And it was tough for my players to keep their concentration since it's close to the end of the J-League season. Hopefully, this result will be a good stepping stone towards the World Cup qualifying round next year."
